Francisco Portillo-Fuentes Sentenced In Deputy Eric Oliver’s Death

Nassau County, FL – Illegal immigrant, Francisco Portillo-Fuentes, was sentenced to two years in prison after running from police in an incident where Nassau County Deputy Eric Oliver was killed.

According to The Florida Times-Union, the incident occurred on November 22, 2016, when Portillo-Fuentes ran from a truck that a U.S. Border Patrol agent approached at a Gate station in Yulee. Two Nassau County Deputies, including Deputy Eric Oliver, began chasing him on foot. Deputy Oliver followed Portillo-Fuentes across Florida 200 through morning rush-hour traffic but was struck and killed before he made it across the road.

Portillo-Fuentes fled the scene and was apprehended after a manhunt. He entered the United States illegally in 2008, and had pleaded guilty in December 2016 to re-entering the United States after an earlier removal. Two years is the maximum sentence allowed for the charge.
His attorney argued that he had no intent to harm Deputy Oliver but U.S. District Judge Marcia Morales Howard said that he was still accountable for “actions that ultimately cost a life.” She said that Portillo-Fuentes’ behavior rose to the level of an aggravating factor, and that his actions in running across a busy highway might have resulted in traffic crashes and injuries to drivers and passengers.

Relatives of fallen hero Deputy Oliver attended the hearing. His father, Douglas Oliver, told the Judge that Portillo-Fuentes’ actions ruined his family. He also said that “hopefully he’ll learn a lesson.” Judge Howard said that Portillo-Fuentes will be deported after he serves his time and that he will be monitored for a year including a requirement that he not re-enter the United States unless it’s legally. His defense attorney told Judge Howard that she did not believe he would return to this country.

Deputy Oliver was 32-years-old when he was killed, doing his job. And the person responsible gets two years? There should be some sort of justice for Deputy Oliver’s family, who will have to live with Portillo-Fuentes’ choices forever.
