Since the media appears uninterested in publishing the crap our cops have to tolerate, I’ve decided to do more posts about it.

Palmer, Alaska – Almando Abarca shot and killed a police K9 during a pursuit on Sunday morning, and the officers didn’t wait for the suspect to shoot them as well.

At around 5:20 AM on Sunday morning, a Palmer police officer stopped a car with four occupants. The car then took off and the officer called Alaska State Troopers to assist in the pursuit. The vehicle eventually pulled down a long driveway, and the driver got out and started running. The Palmer police officer and two troopers with a K9 pursued him into the woods.

The driver, Almando Abarca, 25, turned and fired multiple rounds, mortally wounding the police K9. Officers returned fire, striking Abarca in the shoulder. Abarca survived, and was taken into custody. The K9 died several hours later.

Almando Abarca has been hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. Abarca is being charged with Assault in the Third Degree (two counts), Harming a Police Dog in the First Degree, Eluding Police, and was remanded on an outstanding $20,000 arrest warrant (PACE warrant for Burglary 2). Abarca was apparently fleeing due to his outstanding warrant.

Per department policies, the names of the involved officers won’t be released for 72 hours. The name of the K9 won’t be released until the officers have been identified, because naming the K9 would identify the dog’s handler.

Critics of the shooting are saying that the officers shouldn’t have shot Almando Abarca for shooting a dog, even if it was a police dog. However, Abarca wasn’t shot for shooting the K9. He was shot because he turned and was shooting at pursuing officers, including the dog.
