Two men are in custody after an alleged drug-related home invasion and robbery Wednesday in Grand Rapids, police said.
The Grand Rapids Police Department reported that a gun was discharged during a struggle, but no injuries were reported in the incident, which was reported at 11:15 p.m.
Officers were called to a residence on the 400 block of Northwest 17th Avenue on the report of a “hostage situation” and found several people outside the home, according to police.
The residents said a suspect had entered the house wearing a mask and carrying two semi-automatic firearms. He demanded drugs and money, holding a female at gunpoint for about 30 minutes, while another suspect waited in a nearby vehicle, according to a news release.
An unrelated man then entered the house and confronted the robber, the occupants said. A gun discharged during the struggle, and two females were able to escape at that time, according to police.
Officers arrested one suspect, a 28-year-old Cloquet man, who was found running through the neighborhood with two firearms. The second suspect, a 19-year-old Grand Rapids man, was later apprehended in Aitkin County.
Grand Rapids Assistant Police Chief Steve Schaar said the incident was not a random crime.
The men were being held Thursday at the Itasca County Jail. The News Tribune generally does not identify suspects until they have been formally charged.
The Itasca County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol, Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office and Bovey Police Department assisted in the investigation.
