A 23-year-old Virginia man faces nine felony charges stemming from a drive-by shooting in Cloquet that left two men injured Sunday.

Jesse Jay Bohanon was charged in Carlton County District Court Tuesday with three counts of second-degree attempted murder while committing a drive-by shooting, three counts of second-degree assault, one count of drive-by shooting, one count of dangerous weapons-intentional discharge of firearm that endangers safety and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and/or ammunition.
Cloquet Police Chief Steve Stracek said on Monday that Bohanon allegedly fired a gun two separate times during the incident, but the injuries happened during the second shooting at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the area of Brevator and Big Lake roads on the Fond du Lac Reservation.

The victims were on the phone with 911 before the first shots were fired, according to Stracek.

According to the criminal complaint:

Two men and a woman stopped at McDonald’s to eat, but were still in their vehicle when Bohanon drove up to the vehicle and began yelling in a threatening manner. The three people decided to leave and Bohanon chased them on Big Lake and Brevator roads. Bohanon sped up to pass the vehicle and then fired six to eight shots into the vehicle.

The vehicle’s driver was shot in the hand and the backseat passenger was shot in the back. The woman was uninjured. The trio drove to the Fond du Lac Police Department and from there were transported to St. Luke’s hospital in Duluth.

During a search of the area, Bohanon’s vehicle was found on the 1300 block of Dagwaagin Road. People at the home said he had been there earlier, but left on foot. He was arrested at about 9:15 p.m. Sunday near the Cloquet Forestry Center.

Police found shell casings in the vehicle he had been driving and on the street where the shooting occurred.
