Aitkin woman who fired shots at officers is shot and killed

A 50-year-old Aitkin woman who was threatening to kill herself and who fired multiple shots at law enforcement officers was shot and killed by officers Tuesday evening in a rural area outside the city, authorities said Wednesday.

The Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office reported that they were contacted Tuesday at about 4:25 p.m. to check the welfare of the woman.

Deputies located the woman’s vehicle at about 5:30 p.m. in a rural location northeast of Aitkin in Fleming Township, and began to talk with her. She was armed with firearms and was threatening to harm herself, the Sheriff’s Office reported. Sheriff’s deputies were joined by conservation officers from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and responding officers continued to talk with the woman.

The talks went on for more than 90 minutes. The Sheriff’s Office said that on at least two occasions during the exchange, the woman fired shots towards the officers.

At about 7:10 p.m. officers returned fire, striking the woman. She was airlifted to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, Minn., where she died shortly after 10 p.m. The woman has been taken to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner for formal identification and an autopsy.

The woman’s name has not yet been released.

The incident is under investigation by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
