I’d sure like to see an effort like this by the Fond Du Lac tribe..and I’d like to see them build their own jail.

Tower, MN (NNCNOW.com) — The Bois Forte Tribe says they can’t ignore a dangerous trend that has its grips on the area.
In the fight against drug addiction, the tribal council passed what they call one of the strongest anti–drug laws in the country.

It’s part of what the council is calling a war against the heroin, meth, and prescription painkiller abuse they’re seeing ravage the reservation.
The law sets a mandatory minimum sentence of 90 days in jail for those caught with any illegal drug in a place where there are frequently children, like playgrounds and schools, and around vulnerable adults.
The law is worded so it broadly covers a lot of the 170 square mile reservation.
Tribal Chairman Kevin Leecy says the law is only part of the battle.
They’re also going after the addiction itself.
“We want to make sure that, you know, at the same time there’s consequences we also want them to heal,” said Chariman Leecy. “So we’re looking at different programs and ways to balance that, so we want them to become contributors to society again.”
Chairman Leecy will be traveling around the country looking for the best healing processes and ways to get through chemical dependencies.
He will be talking with other reservations that have had widespread drug addiction problems and bring ideas back to Bois Forte.
And thanks to funding from the funding from the U.S. Department of justice the council is looking into home monitoring systems, judicial help, and traditional healing methods to combat what they call a disease.
And the tribe is not taking on the problem alone.
The tribe is partnering with the Boundary Waters Drug Task Force in watching for drug activity on the reservation.
They also brought in an undercover agent from the Bureau of Indian Affairs to get a grip on the problem.
