An Ely police officer has been indicted for allegedly engaging in sexual contact with a girl under the age of 18.

Sgt. Jason Allen Carlson, 37, was indicted by a grand jury on one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, St. Louis County Attorney Mark Rubin announced.

The indictment was returned on Oct. 14 and made public Friday when Carlson appeared in State District Court in Virginia for an initial appearance.

The complaint alleges that Carlson was in a “position of authority” over the victim, who was at least 16 years old, but under 18. The act is alleged to have happened in December 2014.

Carlson, a patrol sergeant, has been with the Ely Police Department for about 10 years, the county attorney’s office said.

Sixth Judicial District Judge Gary Pagliaccetti set Carlson’s bail at $15,000 and referred him for supervised release. His next court appearance is set for Dec. 21.
