Chisholm man charged with kidnap, rape of minor
By News Tribune Today at 12:45 a.m.

A Chisholm man faces felony charges of criminal sexual conduct with a minor and kidnapping in connection with an alleged crime earlier this month.

Owoidighe Isongitiat Ekanem, 34, is charged in 6th District Court with two counts of sexual penetration or contact with a person younger than 13 and one count of kidnapping a person younger than 16.

He’s also charged with assault.

According to the criminal complaint:

Dispatchers received a 911 call about 4:30 a.m. on Oct. 9 from a female reporting her friend had been sexually assaulted in the area of the Chisholm Disc Golf Course.

The victim, whose age is not given in the complaint, was taken to Fairview Range Medical Center in Hibbing where two officers interviewed her. She told them she had been waiting in her friend’s car at the disc golf course and had fallen asleep around 1 a.m. She said she was awakened by someone knocking on the passenger-side window and unlocked and opened the door because she thought it was either her friend or the police.

Instead, she was confronted by a man whom she described as black-skinned with a foreign accent, who had the smell of beer on his breath. She said that when she started to use her phone, the man grabbed the phone from her, pulled her out of the vehicle by her hair and hit her several times on the left side of her face. He then pulled off her sweatshirt and tied it around her head, telling her that he would kill her if she didn’t do what he said or if she tried to look at him.

The victim said the man then threw her in the back seat of his vehicle and after driving a short distance stopped, took her out and raped her.

She said he put her back in the back seat of the vehicle and after another short drive raped her again in the vehicle.

She said she thought she felt a child’s booster seat under her.

After another short drive, he again pulled her out of the vehicle, led her back to her friend’s vehicle and returned her phone. She said she pulled off the sweatshirt and saw her assailant drive away in a light-colored SUV. She then called her friend and told her to come right away.

Police said the girl suffered a fractured nose as a result of the assault.

The complaint doesn’t say what led police to Ekanem, but it said officers learned he had been drinking that night at two Chisholm establishments. They also learned that Ekanem had been separated from his wife, who lives in Hibbing, since August; and that he drives a gold-colored Ford Escape and keeps a booster seat in the back for his young son.

Officers also learned that Ekanem had been living with a friend in Chisholm. Ekanem told them he had gone straight home after “last call” at the Cheap Thrills bar. But his friend told officers that Ekanem didn’t arrive home until after 5 a.m.

If found guilty, Ekanem would face a maximum sentence of 30 years for each of the criminal sexual conduct charges, 40 years for the kidnapping charge and five years for the assault charge.

He is being held in St. Louis County Jail on $250,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in District Court in Hibbing on Thursday.

He’s been in the USA for years. In 2007-2008, he lived in my apartment building and he did nursing work at an old folks home. I never liked the guy. He was a snake then, and worse than that now!
